Who owns the land the panhandle trail is built on? Does the railroad still own it?
Stacey, in the Collier section, which is what we manage, there are no campgrounds and most of the land on either side is privately owned. Along the rest of the trail it’s pretty much the same, but there may be some connectors from other parks and recreation areas in towns along the trail. Raccoon Creek and Hillman State Park are north of Burgettstown so you could look into possibilities like that.
Is there anywhere to camp along the trail?
Andrew, that would be fantastic! I (the admin) live in Carnegie and since I discovered Panhandle I’ve dreamed of being able to get on the trail right in the middle of town instead of having to drive my bike there or walk it along the tracks (which is illegal). It’s a lengthy process, but hopefully someday the stars will align and the permissions and the money will come together.
Do you think that the trail could ever extend down to Carnegie? That would be great to be able to get on it there!
Maryann, if you go to our Maps page you’ll find a downloadable map of the entire trail from the trailhead in Walker’s Mill to Colliers WV.
I would like a map of the trail
