Food Trucks on the Trail

We’re not sure if a food truck will be on the trail Saturday, May 22, 2021. Because of poor cell reception, their money transfer programs are iffy, something they can’t work with. But it will still be a busy weekend.

Rock the Quarry to Help Support the Panhandle Trail August 25 and 26

Night-crowd-1000px

Music, food, science demo, games, raffles, bonfire, fire trucks, fun for all ages—since the Panhandle Trail was opened for business in 2000, “Rock the Quarry” (RTQ) has been an annual tradition featuring two days of music, food, and fun on the trail to help raise funds for upkeep, maintenance and community events for trail users hosted by the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail.

Each year, RTQ showcases up-and-coming local musical talent and a popular headliner each night. The afternoon features lots of activities for the kids and the evening includes the Grand Rubber Duck Race and the traditional Sunset Remembrance Ceremony.

What’s the quarry part about? The area near the trailhead was once a limestone quarry with portions of limestone left as well as three ponds where the stage and event area are set up.

This year’s RTQ starts on Friday, August 24 from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday, August 25 from 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. Vendors both days include food, games, artwork, women’s clothing and cosmetics and the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail with a basket raffle.

Vendor spaces are still available for one or both days. Visit the website for more information and an application to download.

About the Panhandle Trail and the Collier Friends

The Panhandle Trail is named after the Panhandle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the abandoned rail line upon which it is built, and stretches for 29 miles from Walkers Mill in Collier Township, PA to Colliers, WV.

The Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail maintains approximately 4 miles of the Panhandle Trail from the Walkers Mill Entrance to Gregg Station with spring cleanups and smaller projects of maintenance and upkeep. In addition to Rock the Quarry the organization hosts a Night Walk on the Saturday before Halloween with lighted Jack-o-lanterns along a section of the trail and hayrides, hot chocolate and cider, and treat bags for the kids.

In addition to inviting all who want to come to the event, Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail is also accepting gift certificates or other prizes for our various auctions and raffles from individuals or businesses—items with logos are welcome—as well as monetary donations and volunteer help with RTQ and during the year for upkeep and other events.

If you are able to contribute items or have questions, please visit our website at www.panhandletrail.org and use the comment form to send messages directly. You can also contact Kay Downey-Clarke (724-693-0870) kayclarke@comcast.net to make arrangements for monetary donations and donated items. Checks can be made payable to The Panhandle Trail Association and sent c/o Treasurer, 2520 Hilltop Road, Oakdale, PA 15071. We are a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization and our tax number is available upon request. To ensure that we recognize all donors in our program, please let us know of your commitment by August 19, 2018. If you wish to remain anonymous, please so note.

Chilly But Fun, Night Walk 2016

Smile!

Smile!

The line for the hayrides went all the way around the stage, the kids enjoyed stories and the movie Casper, and no one really seemed to notice how cold it was with hot chocolate and cider and a bonfire. Hope you had a chance to join us, and hope to see you next year!

RTQ XVI So Much Fun, Hope to See You Next Year!

Getting ready for music.

Getting ready for music.

So it was hot and humid but no rain for the annual fundraiser for Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail! This event is what helps to keep the trail in shape for everyone who uses it, so thanks everyone who joined us on Friday and Saturday, bought raffle and ducky tickets, patronized our vendors and told friends about what a great trail we have right here in our back yards.

The music was non-stop great! We’d like to thank headliners Beaver River Band and Jill West and the Blues Attack, and also Dan Hanczar & Blues Alloy and Trainwreck, and special music guests Deluded Youth, Summer Camp,  Pretty Lunatic, JJ Bickel & the Liberators and The Collisions for joining us this year.

Vendors from local businesses and organizations helped support the event and offered food and services, so don’t forget to support them the rest of the year: Chikis Cool Treats, D&R Kettle Corn, Dylan’s Quest Cotton Candy, Kristen’s Togs, Alpine Pools, Bernadette Kazmarski artist, Robinson Township Chiropractic Center, Howard Hanna Real Estate, Panhandle Trail, Rennerdale Corner Store, Rennerdale VFD.

And special thanks to our sponsors who help us bring this event to you: JENDOCO Real Estate, Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineers, Carnegie Collier Rotary, Howard Hanna Real Estate, Lane Construction Corp., Alpine Pools, Goehring, Rutter & Boehm, PC—Chuck Means, Collier Township and Fotovich Excavating.

Noblestown Road Detour for Rock the Quarry

Luke and Ava enjoy cherry snow cones.

Luke and Ava enjoy cherry snow cones.

Noblestown Road in Walkers Mill closed Monday August 22 for two months. This is the main road from Carnegie and I-79 to reach the trailhead in Walker’s Mill.

PennDOT’s detour

Traveling eastbound (from Oakdale area)

  • From Noblestown Road, turn left onto McMichael Road (Route 3041)
  • Turn right onto Baldwin Road (Route 3054)
  • Baldwin Road becomes Ewing Road
  • Ewing Road becomes Collier Street
  • Turn right onto Boyd Street
  • Boyd Street becomes Cubbage Street
  • Follow Cubbage Street to West Main Street/Noblestown Road
  • End detour

Traveling westbound (from Carnegie)

  • Same detour route in the opposite direction

Using GPS

If you have GPS, use 110 Noblestown Road, Carnegie 15106 as an address. There are a couple of alternates:

  1. Take I-79 Exit 55, turn left on Rt. 50 to the light at Thoms Run. Turn left onto Thoms Run (past CV High School) to light at Forsythe Road then turn right up hill. At T, turn left onto Hilltop Road past Collier Municipal Bldg, then make a right onto Walkers Mill Road. Trail is at bottom of hill. For main parking, continue to Noblestown Road, turn left then another left into Township yard.
  2. For the adventurous (no large trucks), you can get off at Exit 57 or continue west on Noblestown Road from Carnegie about 300 feet and turn right onto First St. then immediate right onto Dorrington (toward DDI and Weavertown). Wind across bridge and take a sharp left up hill. Continue through several sharps turns to Hilltop Road. Turn right and go about 2 ½ miles to a right onto Walker Mill Road.
